Materials
You will need the following materials for this project: a cutting machine with a sharp blade, puff vinyl, transfer tape, weeding tools, and a design.
Puff vinyl
Puff vinyl is a type of heat transfer vinyl (HTV) that has a raised, 3D effect. It’s often used to make lettering and designs on clothing and accessories stand out. If you want to use puff vinyl with your Cricut cutting machine, you’ll need to know how to cut it correctly.
In this post, we’ll show you how to cut puff vinyl on your Cricut machine. We’ll also give you some tips on how to weed and apply puff vinyl so that your project turns out looking great!
Cricut cutting machine
Cricut cutting machines are a necessary tool for anyone looking to cut precise vinyl designs and lettering. They come in a variety of sizes and can be used for a wide range of materials, from paper to fabric to wood.
If you’re looking to cut puff vinyl, you’ll need a machine that can handle thicker materials. The Cricut Explore Air 2 and the Cricut Maker are both good options for cutting puff vinyl.
In addition to the machine itself, you’ll also need:
-Puff vinyl
-Vinyl transfer tape
-Weeding tools
-A cutting mat
Standard grip mat
place your vinyl shiny side down on your cutting mat. If you’re using patterned vinyl, make sure the pattern is facing up so it will cut correctly. Use a utility knife or rotary cutter to trim the excess vinyl away from your design, leaving about 1/4″ around each edge.
Set Up
Open up Design Space. For this project, I’m going to be using the Puff Vinyl. You can find it by clicking on “ browse all materials.” Type in “Puff Vinyl” to find it quickly. Next, click on the “Vinyl” filter on the left side of the Design Space screen. And then, choose “Puff Vinyl.”
Insert a new blade into the cutting machine
If you are using a Cricut machine to cut puff vinyl, you will need to insert a new blade into the cutting machine. Puff vinyl is a thicker material and requires a deeper blade cut. You can purchase a replacement blade for your Cricut machine at most craft stores or online.
To insert the blade, first power on your Cricut machine. Then, open the housing on the side of the machine where the blade is located. Insert the new blade into the housing with the sharp side facing down. Close the housing and tighten the blade knob until it is snug.
Load the puff vinyl onto the grip mat
To load the puff vinyl onto the grip mat, start by lifting up the mat a few inches so that you can slide the vinyl sheet underneath. Once the sheet is in place, lower the cutting mat back down and press it gently into place so that the vinyl adheres. If necessary, use a scraper tool or your fingers to smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles.
Cutting
To cut puff vinyl with your Cricut machine, you’ll need to use the rotary blade. The rotary blade is a special blade that can quickly and easily cut through thicker materials. Puff vinyl is a thicker material, so it’s important to use the rotary blade to get a clean cut. Here’s how to do it.
Select the design you want to cut
Open Design Space and select the “New Project” icon in the top left corner of the design canvas. This will open a grid of all of the available designs in Design Space. You can browse through these designs, or search for something specific using the search bar.
When you find a design you want to cut, select it to open the editing window. In this window, you can adjust the size of your design, change colors, and more.
When you’re ready, select the “Make It” button in the top right corner of the screen. This will bring you to a new screen where you can preview your design and make any final adjustments before cutting.
Adjust the blade depth and pressure settings
Assuming you are using a brand new blade, the default blade depth on a Cricut machine is usually set at 2. To cut Puff Vinyl successfully, you will need to increase the blade depth to 3. You can do this by turning the knob on the housing of your Cricut machine clockwise.
As you adjust the depth, you will also need to make a slight change to your pressure settings. The recommended pressure setting for Puff Vinyl is 245. You can adjust the pressure by pressing the down arrow on your Cricut machine until it reaches the desired number.
Cut the design
Open the design in Cricut Design Space. Select and size the image. Be sure to Mirror the image if you want it to cut in reverse like traditional mirror vinyl. Cut the design using a strong grip mat and remove any excess vinyl from your mat.
